When Heron Creek students arrived at their new school this fall, there was a lot to be excited about: wider hallways, a playground, a gym that has students looking forward to PE, a bigger library, and more room to learn, work, and connect.
Behind the transition were countless details. Administrative assistants Kathleen O’Brien and Stephanie Wiggins helped make sure they were taken care of, earning them recognition as the September Staff Spotlight recipients.
Superintendent Larry Didway often says leaders “set the weather.” At Heron Creek, Kathleen and Stephanie help set that weather by creating a welcoming environment while keeping things running behind the scenes.
Together, they bring more than 50 years of experience in public education. Kathleen joined Clackamas ESD four years ago after 25 years with Oregon City School District. She brings a “get it done” attitude to everything from paying bills and answering inquiries to registering students, where her Synergy student information system expertise has earned her the nickname “Synergy wizard.”
Kathleen describes joining Clackamas ESD as “one of the most welcoming experiences,” citing the depth and breadth of support throughout the organization.
At Bolton, the location of her office allows Kathleen to see students more often and feel more connected to the school community. She has especially enjoyed seeing their excitement about having a gym and other new spaces.
Stephanie joined Clackamas ESD three years ago after 21 years with Portland Public Schools. Friendly and energetic, she knows every student by name. Her work ranges from coordinating maintenance needs, creating flyers and posters, purchasing supplies, even exploring the possibility of a coffee cart at Heron Creek – and everything in between.
During the move, Stephanie focused on “helping do whatever was needed” and the possibilities the new campus could offer.
The building “is great for the kids,” she said. She is excited to see students and staff blossom in their new surroundings, noting that when people are happy, that positivity carries into their work.
For Kathleen and Stephanie, the move was about more than getting a building ready. Their work helped create a place where students and staff can thrive, and Heron Creek can feel like home.
