In addition to their extended school year program, our early intervention/early childhood special education team introduced new parent-child playgroups in locations across the county this summer. Designed for families of children who use augmentative and alternative communication devices, the groups offered a fun, low-pressure space to play, connect and practice using AAC during the summer break.
Led by our speech-language pathologists, sessions featured sensory-friendly activities like songs, hands-on art and open-ended play, plus a chance for families to meet others navigating similar communication journeys within their community.
“Some of these families live just blocks apart and had never met. It’s been meaningful to see this group provide a space for building relationships and a sense of community,” said Kali McQueen, a speech-language pathologist leading one of the groups.
